Hiking is the only way to really get to know Paklenica. The Park area contains 150-200 km of trails and paths, from those intended for tourists, leading from Velika Paklenica Canyon to Manita peć cave, Lugarnica forest cottage and the mountain hut, to those intended for mountaineers, leading to the highest peaks of Velebit. The trails in the Park are marked with boards and mountaineering signs.

Mountain hut and shelters in the Park

Paklenica Mountain Hut
It takes a two hours’ walk from Velika Paklenica Canyon to get to the mountain hut. The hut has around 50 beds in multi-bed rooms, a kitchen and a dining room. From June to September, the mountain lodge is open every day, and the rest of the year on weekends. We suggest you bring a sleeping bag if you plan to spend sleep over in the lodge. The mountain hut is operated by the Paklenica Mountaineering Association from Zadar.

Shelter on Struge
The shelter is situated at an altitude of 1 400 m, around 3 hours on foot from the mountain hut. The shelter has 15 beds. It is supplied with water from the spring on Marasovac, around 20 minutes on foot from the Shelter.

Shelter on Ivine vodice
The shelter is at 1 200 m asl, around 2 and a half hours on foot from the mountain hut. This is an open-type shelter providing overnight accommodation for around a dozen persons. There is a spring nearby. The shelter is a suitable location to spend the night in if you plan to visit Sveto brdo.

Shelter on Ivine vodice

 

Shelter on Vlaški grad
It is situated at an altitude of 1 268. It takes around 4 hours to get there from the mountain hut and around an hour from the shelter on Ivine vodice. 8-10 persons can spend the night. It is also suitable for walks toward Sveto brdo, Vlaški grad, Veliko Libinje or Malo Libinje. There is a spring nearby that may go dry in the late July, and water only reappears after abundant rains.

Please bring appropriate equipment if you plan to sleep over in a shelter.
Please leave the shelters clean after you leave
After using water and heating wood, please replenish the shelter so that it could always be available to other visitors.

Advice for mountaineers

  • Never go to the mountains alone
  • Select a trail appropriate to your physical abilities
  • Inform your family of the direction you take and the time of return and adhere to this
  • Seek and take to Park personnel’s advice
  • Check the weather forecast
  • Wear appropriate clothing, mountaineering shoes, warm and waterproof clothes and protection against rain, wind and sun
  • Take drinking water with you
  • Take a flashlight, matches and a candle
  • Take a first aid kit
  • When going on a longer excursion, take a mountaineering map and preferably a compass
  • Stay on marked mountain trails
  • Be extra careful in wintertime and mind the early sunset
  • In wintertime, do not take trips to areas you are not familiar in summertime

Rules

  • Do not light fire or throw cigarette butts
  • Respect the local customs and tradition
  • Take any waste back with you
  • Do not contaminate water flows and springs
  • Camping on the territory of NP Paklenica is not allowed
  • The territory of NP Paklenica is statutorily protected, so please:
    • do not damage any trees, do not rip out any flowers or other plants
    • do not frighten, disturb, hunt or kill any animal species
    • keep your dog on a leash
  • You are required to have a ticket to NP Paklenica and present it to NP Paklenica officers at their request
